The Story of Salla Wilderness Lodges
LAAVU ≈ Lean-to shelter
Long ago, wilderness people used to build shelters when hunting, fishing or hiking in the woods and mountains. They tied a log between two large trees with a rope and gather pine branches to make a roof to protect themselves from the wind and rain. Finally, they made a traditional fire from two large logs in front of the shelter to light up the evening.
Laavu (as the locals call this lean-to) is a perfect place to rest, observe the surrounding nature and plan the next day’s excursions. Did you see a trout jump on the surface of the pond? Did you hear the voice of the black grouse from the marsh?” the man’s faithful friend, the Nordic Spitz, pricked up his ears. But soon the dog returns to the laavu and settles down to rest. The fire keeps the man and his dog warm through the night.
The Laavu offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding wilderness. It is the best place to be a part of the surrounding nature.
At Salla Wilderness Lodge we want to offer you a modern version of an ancient night spent on a laavu. We hope you will enjoy the beautiful scenery, the midnight sun or the glow of the Northern Lights in our modern Laavu. We wish you sweet dreams and unforgettable trips in the Salla wilderness!
